The Retirement Decision Lab

Decision 3 · Week 3 · Wed Nov 18

Is it cheaper to retire abroad?

SHORT ANSWEROften, yes. But cost of living is one line. The better question is where your income buys the most total value: housing, health care, safety, currency stability, taxes, and the people you want near you.

The same income buys a different life in different places. A lower rent can be wiped out by health insurance, flights home, or a currency that moves against you.

Staying where you are is a decision too. Overpaying $150 a month on housing you don't need adds up to $36,000 over 20 years.

Many people run the comparison and decide to stay put. That is a good outcome when it is chosen on purpose.

Where it gets personal

Week 3 is the price of place: locations compared on total value, not cost of living alone.
