The Retirement Decision Lab

Decision 4 · Week 4 · Wed Dec 2

How do I find purpose after I retire?

SHORT ANSWERPurpose after work usually comes from three things you have to rebuild on purpose: a weekly structure, a way to contribute that someone counts on, and regular contact with people. Losing social connection carries health risks comparable to smoking.

This is a health question as well as a happiness one. The 2023 U.S. Surgeon General's advisory found that lacking social connection can raise the risk of premature death as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. Poor social relationships were linked to a 29% higher risk of heart disease and 32% higher risk of stroke, and chronic loneliness and isolation can raise dementia risk by about 50% in older adults. The CDC adds depression, anxiety and type 2 diabetes to the list.

Free time fills fast. In the 2025 American Time Use Survey, adults 75 and older spent 7.4 hours a day on leisure, and TV was the largest single use of leisure time for all adults at 2.6 hours a day. Only 30% of people 15 and older socialized and communicated on an average day in 2025, down from 38% in 2015.

A practical method has three parts. Structure: fixed weekly anchors, such as two mornings that start at a set time. Contribution: one role where people expect you, paid or unpaid, like mentoring, a board seat, part-time work or caregiving. Community: at least one group that meets on a schedule, so contact does not depend on you starting it each time.

Test it before you leave work. Try the schedule on vacation weeks and see what the days actually look like. Purpose rarely arrives on its own. People who had it through work usually need to replace the same pieces: a reason to get up, people who notice if you are absent, and a skill still in use.

Where it gets personal

In Week 4 you draft a sample week and name the structure, contribution and community pieces before you commit to a date.
