The Retirement Decision Lab

Decision 3 · Week 3 · Wed Nov 18 · Country spotlight: Colombia

Can a US retiree join Colombia's health system?

SHORT ANSWERYes. Foreigners with a Colombian foreigner ID (cédula de extranjería) can enroll in the national health system through an EPS, in the contributory or subsidized regime depending on their ability to pay.

Most retirees with a pension enter the contributory regime and pay a monthly contribution based on income.

Many also buy private coverage (medicina prepagada) for faster access to specialists. Medicare does not pay for care in Colombia.
